for Human Rights

Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) is a human rights organization based in Mombasa, Kenya. MUHURI works to promote and protect the rights of marginalized communities, particularly in the coastal region of Kenya, through research, advocacy, and legal support. The organization addresses a range of human rights issues, including police brutality, extrajudicial killings, land rights, and access to justice. MUHURI also provides support to victims of human rights abuses and conducts community outreach and education programs to raise awareness of human rights issues. The organization aims to create a more just and equitable society where the rights and dignity of all individuals are respected and upheld.

MUHURI has several programs to promote and protect human rights in the coastal region of Kenya, including:

Legal Aid Program:

MUHURI provides legal aid to victims of human rights abuses and marginalized communities who cannot afford legal representation.

Land Rights Program

MUHURI works to protect the land rights of indigenous communities in the coastal region of Kenya, who are often at risk of losing their land due to land grabbing and illegal evictions.

Police Accountability Program

MUHURI monitors and documents cases of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in the region, and provides support to victims of such abuses.

Civic Education and Outreach Program

 MUHURI conducts community outreach and education programs to raise awareness of human rights issues and promote civic engagement and participation.

Women's Rights Program

MUHURI works to promote gender equality and women’s rights in the region, including advocacy for legislation to protect women from violence and discrimination.

Environmental Justice Program

MUHURI advocates for the protection of the environment and natural resources in the region, and supports communities affected by environmental degradation and pollution.
