MUHURI chairman Khelef Khalifa has petitioned the National Assembly to reject Judge Martha Koome’s appointment as the Chief Justice (CJ) of Kenya.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has chosen Koome as the next CJ subject to approval by MPs.
Khalifa’s petition is detailed and involves a purported appeal Koome heard ahead of the repeat presidential election in 2017.
Khalifa had won a case at a High Court when Judge George Odunga declared as illegal the appointment of constituency returning officers and their deputies. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was the respondent in the matter.
IEBC allegedly appeal.
It’s this appeal, in which Koome got involved as a judge, that has called into question her integrity and independence.
