Nairobi women have cited instances of discrimination because of their religion.

A Muslim, for instance, said shoppers blocked her from accessing a mall when Al Shabaab terrorists attacked Dusit D2 Complex, Nairobi, in 2019. She said the public associated her religion with terrorism.

A Christian, on the other hand, said Majengo neighbours stopped her from playing gospel songs because they are “noisy” – but they would enjoy secular music playing in other houses.

These two cases, among many more, have created a wrong perception about various religions in Kenya – a situation this project, “Religious Minorities: Overcoming Divides, Respecting Rights“, seeks to change.

Institute for Interreligious Dialogue and Islamic Studies (IRDIS) on January 23, 2020, trained Nairobi women on religious minority rights and interreligious literacy – based on their perspective.

The training at Tangaza University College saw women attempting these questions:

1. What are the main questions and gaps around religious minority rights from specifically female, gender-based perspective in the Kenyan context?
2. What are the potentials and shortcomings around interreligious literacy from specifically female, gender-based perspective in the Kenyan context?
