Muslims for Human Rights
Who we are
Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) based at the Kenyan Coast. It was founded in September 1997 with the objective of contributing towards the promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights by all. The operations of the MUHURI are guided by five core values, namely: transparency and accountability; gender parity and de-marginalization; respect for human rights; fairness and equity; and constitutionalism and the rule of law. In 2019, we opened an office in Garissa to addresses human rights violations reported in the Northern part of Kenya.
Core Values
At MUHURI, we promote and defend all human rights accountably, responsively and professionally. We do this in a manner that is consistent with the values in the Constitution of Kenya, recognizing and encouraging staff creativity, continuous learning and teamwork; in partnership with communities of human rights defenders and other stakeholders.

Increase resistance to impunity and champion the expansion of constitutionalism in Kenya.

A just society anchored on human rights and good governance.

To advance the realization of all human rights as an agitator, enabler and a voice for the rule of law in Kenya.
Strategic Objectives
To provide a platform for grassroots empowerment for marginalized and vulnerable persons within the Coastal region of Kenya to progressively realize and enjoy their fundamental human rights and freedoms provided in law.
To create an all-inclusive collaboration platform for state and non-state actors as a sustainable and effective means for community peace building and development.
To embolden operational capacity for MUHURI towards its realization of its human rights agenda and defense of the rule of law and constitutionalism in Kenya
